The Astronaut You Were Looking For Has Been Found!

On October 23, 1986, to commemorate its 146th anniversary, PTT (Turkish Post) launched a year-long campaign aimed at encouraging citizens to revive the tradition of letter writing and keeping the concept of the handwritten message alive.

As part of this campaign titled “Letter to the Year 2000”, a letter was mailed from Istanbul’s Aksaray PTT center on October 27, 1987.

On the envelope was written:
“To be delivered to the first Turkish astronaut.”

When the year 2000 arrived, the letter sent in 1987 remained undelivered—because there was still no Turkish astronaut. Eventually, in February 2002, it was handed over to Toktar Abubakirov, an astronaut of Kazakh origin, closing the chapter.
