In 2008, The Wall Street Journal named Roman Šebrle “the best athlete in the world.” In 2001, Šebrle made history by breaking the 9000-point barrier in decathlon with a score of 9026, becoming the first athlete ever to do so. He held that world record for 11 years—until Ashton Eaton came along.

At the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2012, Eaton didn’t just surpass the 9000-point threshold; he claimed the new record with 9039 points. At the 2015 World Championships in Beijing, he further extended his reign with 9045 points, becoming the world champion.

The sport that crowned Ashton Eaton as one of the greatest athletes of all time was decathlon—a discipline of unrivaled versatility and endurance.

Included in the Olympic Games since 1912, decathlon is a two-day, ten-event competition that tests an athlete’s speed, strength, endurance, and technical skill. The first day includes the 100m sprint, long jump, shot put, high jump, and 400m sprint. The second day features the 110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, and 1500m run.

Each athlete’s performance in every event is converted into points based on a standardized scoring table set by the IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federations). In decathlon, it’s not about winning individual events—what truly matters is the total score accumulated across all ten disciplines.

Today, sport has become an integral part of social life across the globe. Millions of people actively or passively engage in sports—by participating, purchasing gear, or following events via media and in stadiums.

As sports continue to bring large consumer groups together, they have evolved into powerful marketing tools and, ultimately, into a massive global industry.

We’re talking about a vast economy comprising diverse business lines: professional and collegiate sports, sports management, health and fitness, sporting goods and equipment, and the administration of sports facilities, among others.

With the goal of capturing the return potential within this ecosystem, BV Portföy has launched the Sports Industry Variable Fund.

Set to be introduced to investors in the first week of June via TEFAS, this fund is the first of its kind in Turkey—providing a gateway to invest in the massive, interconnected world of the sports industry and all its stakeholders.

Just like the decathlon, where speed, power, endurance, and technical skill are rigorously tested—and where the goal is to accumulate the highest total score across ten events rather than to win just one—this fund embraces a multifaceted, high-performance investment approach. And we’re genuinely excited to be in the race.

Citius, Altius, Fortius—“Faster, Higher, Stronger”—is the official Olympic motto and the spirit that inspires us.
